"Celebrating our 20th
"I don't need to look to see. The Acquired Deafblind Club hosts special events, educational programs, and provides volunteer intervenors for special events. For more information on what is coming up, or to get on the email/snail mail lists, please contact Eddy Morton, Volunteer Intervention Coordinator, at eddy@deafblindservices.com.
On a sunny May day, 8 Deaf-Blind club members and 10 volunteer intervenors travelled via skytrain, seabus, and bus to the Capilano Suspension bridge in North Vancouver. They were greeted by a Capilano tour guide, and our volunteer, local historian and tour guide, Jolene Cumming. After learning the history of the bridge, which was originally built in 1889, and its evolution into the 27 acre park that it is today, they met with a native wood carver to learn about the park’s historic totem poles and felt a traditional button blanket.
After, the group braved their way across the 450 feet bridge which was 230 feet above the Capilano River! They continued on to experience the parks most recent addition, the Treetops Adventure, located in a beautiful rainforest. As it got closer to lunch time, there was a rumor circulating that it was Eddy’s birthday which he tried to hide from everyone! Despite his efforts, the group was able to surprise him with a chocolate brownie and the park provided a small tea-light candle for him to blow out! After lunch, Jolene shared some of the parks historic secrets followed by some free time to roam the rest of the park or to visit the gift shop. A full day of sightseeing and adventure, which would have been impossible without the assistance of the volunteers who made it possible, the group left with great memories.
Earlier this year, the Deaf-Blind club visited Science World, the Vancouver Aquarium, and the PNE’s Fright Night. These outings, supported entirely through fundraising efforts and volunteer intervenors, provide the approximately 20 acquired Deafblind adults in our Deafblind Club with opportunities to socialize and access places that otherwise would be impossible for them to enjoy. Two or three special outings are planned for this fall!
